Finite Element Analysis of Firmness Index for Solid Ellipsoids Subjected to Geometric Variations

A new firmness index for solid ellipsoids was previously developed, which was also a generalization of conventional firmness indices for sphere. This paper continues to investigate the performance of the new index on ellipsoids subjected to geometric variations, including distinct axis ratios, asymmetric geometry, partial removal of mass or volume, and one bended principal axis. A series of finite element simulations were conducted and comparisons were made between the new index and two conventional firmness indices. Simulation results show that the new index is very robust and superior to the other two, thus is believed suitable for fruits or vegetables resembling solid sphere and ellipsoid.
