Present-day engineering students require modern multimedia annotation tools that allow the recording of the flow of complex computer activities along with the instructor verbal explanations during classroom lectures. UGA has developed an "extended classroom" facility using "Silicon Chalk" software whereas, in real time, students can annotate their personal versions of classroom activities which are being recorded into searchable multimedia files that they can take home to review and modify. Over Fall 04 and Spring 05 semesters, 2 undergraduate courses and 1 graduate course had been taught under this format and results from anonymous surveys showed that Silicon Chalk required high performance PCs which might not be always available at students home and that its perceived effectiveness also depended on the maturity and motivation levels of the students.
