When liquid manure is spread on drained cropland in the Midwest a portion of this manure can rapidly travel down macropores into the drainage system and be discharged at the outlet. The scope of this problem was quantified for the Midwest by identifying, on a county by county basis: 1) manure production, 2) land available for manure application, 3) amount of available land that is drained, and 4) the consequences of restricting manure spreading on drained land. This analysis shows that for seven Midwest states, there are currently seven counties with insufficient land base for the application of manure produced in these counties. If drained cropland were excluded from land available for manure application, the number of counties with an insufficient land base would increase to forty-one.
