CORRELATION OF DIGESTIBLE ENERGY AND DIETARY WATER HOLDING CAPACITY INTAKE TO THE BEHAVIOURS AND BLOOD PROFILES IN THE GROWING PIGS

Eight barrows housed individually (LWHarbin White, initial weights were 29.81.43 kg) were used to study effects of daily digestible energy (DE) intake and dietary water holding capacity (WHC) intake on the behaviours and blood profiles in the growing pigs. Two feeds (Low-fibre feed (LF) and High-fibre feed (HF)) offered to the pigs twice daily. Four treatments, LF-HA (low fibre content and high feed allowance), LF-LA (low fibre content and low feed allowance), HF-LA (high fibre content and low feed allowance), and HF-HA (high fibre content and high feed allowance) were arranged in a 44 Latin Square design with blocks of 5 days. The daily DE intake in LF-LA, HF-LA and HF-HA were 0.8, 0.667 and 0.8 times of that in LF-HA, respectively, and the daily WHC intake in LF-LA, HF-LA and HF-HA were 0.8, 1 and 1.2 times of that in LF-HA, respectively. On each observational day the pigs behaviour were observed every 30-s for four 40-min sessions: 1-h before, 2-h after and 4.5-h after morning feed delivery (MFD) and 1-h prior to afternoon feed delivery (AFD), respectively. Pigs jugular blood samples were collected 1-h prior to and 2-h after MFD on the 5th day of each block. The concentrations of glucose, insulin, cholecystokinin (CCK) and motilin in serum were assayed, as well as the concentrations of glucagon and neuropeptide Y in plasma. The results indicated that the duration of standing, the frequency of non-feeding oral-nasal behaviours, the activity level in HF-LA pigs were higher than that in LF-HA pigs (P<0.05), but the duration of lying in HF-LA pigs was shorter than that in LF-HA pigs (P<0.05). During each of the four observation periods, however, all behavioural parameters were did not differ between LF-LA and HF-HA pigs. Across the four treatments, the average glucagon concentration 1-h prior to MFD increased with DE intake. The duration of standing, the frequency of non-feeding oral-nasal behaviours and the activity level 1-h prior to AFD were higher than that of 1-h prior to MFD (P<0.05), while these behavioral parameters 1-h prior to MFD were higher than that of the other periods (P<0.05). In addition, the average levels in the glucose, the insulin and the CCK at 2-h since MFD were higher than at 1-h prior to MFD across the four treatments. It was concluded that the daily DE intake correlated to growing pigs behaviours; in contrast, dietary WHC and fibre intake had a little correlation with the behaviours. Pigs behaviours were influenced by the post-feeding time dramatically.
