Assessment of Water Quality in the Flint Creek and Flint River Watersheds for TMDLs Development

Water quality data were collected at six sampling sites in the Flint Creek and Flint River watersheds, in North Alabama from February 2003 to August 2004 in order to examine temporal and spatial trends on water quality indicator variables. The water quality indicator variables of interest included total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), cadmium, chromium, nickel, lead, zinc, coliform bacteria, biological oxygen demand (BOD5), dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, turbidity, pH, and chlorophyll. Data from all six sampling locations were identified by year (2003 and 2004), watershed (Flint Creek watershed and Flint River watershed), location within each watershed, and season. Statistical evaluation revealed that there was a significant difference between the means for the years, watershed, location, and season for TN, but we observed no significant difference between the means for all class variables for TP. Mean CF bacterial counts, turbidity, biological oxygen demand (BOD5), as well as some heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Ni and Zn) were significantly higher during the 2004 monitoring period. We also observed significantly lower dissolved oxygen (DO) levels for 2004 monitoring period when compared to 2003 monitoring period, suggesting there is a correlation between BOD5 and DO levels.
