Decisions about alternative forestry practices can result in substantial differences in both economic returns and environmental outcomes. Sustainable forest management requires that both economic needs and environmental benefits be satisfied. Herein, we describe the Comprehensive Economic and Environmental Optimization Tool (CEEOT) and how it might be adapted and applied to assess alternative forest management activities. Efforts already carried out have extended the Agricultural Policy/Environmental eXtender (APEX) model to more realistically simulate forest conditions. Future steps will require that these harvest-unit-scale simulations be integrated into the watershed-scale model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), and that the economic component of CEEOT be adapted to forest conditions and practices.
