The Clean Water Act of 1972 required states to set water quality standards based on designated uses, such as public drinking water, fish and wildlife, recreation, agriculture, industrial, etc. It also required states to identify and set priorities on waters not meeting those standards including streams, rivers, reservoirs, lakes and wetlands.(Download PDF) (Export to EndNotes)
