Auernhammer Europe is, after several battles and two world wars on the way to its unification. Carried by its initial production of coal and steel and by agriculture, a new and connected economic area arose and still emerges. Starting with six countries in 1957 (Contracts of Rome), the European Union (EU) grew within 38 years until 1995 up to 15 countries with about 330 million people. Ten more countries joined the European Union on the 5th of May 2004, with now more than 435 million citizens. Further pre-accession countries are waiting for their integration. Because of the different developments in the democratic societies of western Europe and the socialistic governed countries of eastern Europe, the regions within the EU are differently pronounced.
