There many existing approaches to preventing sediment impact to streams but very few means of removing sediment from a previously impacted stream. Most techniques have significant negative impacts as well as positive.

Many of the mountain streams of North Carolina have been significantly impacted by sediment from historic logging, mining and development. Aquatic habitat and stream hydrological functions have both been affected.
