Bankfull Channel Dimensions in Southeast Ohio

Relationships between bankfull channel dimensions and their associated drainage areas in the southeast region of Ohio are established. This may be used to provide the information base to assess impacts of projects for modifying channels and a possible tool to design channels for minimizing these impacts. Thirty-five sites were selected to geographically represent the un-glaciated Allegheny plateaus region of Ohio and for the bankfull channel geometry determinations including width, depth and cross-sectional area relative to drainage area. A total station with an electronic sensor was used for channel cross-sectional and profiling survey. ArcGIS was used for delineating watersheds and the collected survey data were analyzed using The Reference Reach Spreadsheet Excel software. It is found that the bankfull dimensions are strongly related to the associated drainage area. No other variable showed association including further subdivision of the region.
