SEDIMENT – WATER PHOSPHORUS EQUILIBRIUM IN OZARK STREAMS

External sources of phosphorus (P) to aquatic systems often influence P equilibrium between stream sediment and water, particularly in stream receiving municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent rich in P. Sediment water P equilibrium is largely related to physical characteristics of sediments and may also be affected by some watershed characteristics, notably land use. Over twenty streams were sampled in Fall 2003 and Spring 2004, where three water samples and three composite sediment samples were collected at each site during each season. Water samples were analyzed for soluble reactive P (SRP), nitratenitrogen (NO3N) ammoniumN (NH4N), total N (TN), total organic carbon (TOC) and sestonic chlorophyll a (chl a). Sediment equilibrium P concentration (EPC0) was estimated using a linear adsorption isotherm where EPC0 is the xintercept and the slope (K) of the relation is a simple measure of sediment P buffering capacity. These streams represent catchments of variable fractions of urban, pasture and forested lands. Sediment EPC0 will be statistically compared to water chemistry, land use and other physical characteristics of the stream sediments.
