Rapid assessments are now used widely to determine areas for stream and riparian protection, conservation, and restoration. Johnson County, Kansas selected Tetra Tech EM Inc. (Tetra Tech) to develop a Stream Asset Inventory (SAI) that provides information on stream stability, aquatic and terrestrial habitat quality, and water quality. Tetra Tech designed the (SAI) for use by county staff and individuals minimally experienced in stream assessment. The scoring system Tetra Tech developed allows quick classification of stream quality within surveyed reaches. Initial field trial indicates that the SAI is relatively easy to use, and that individuals with a strong background in stream assessment can implement it quickly. Developing a How-To manual and training workshop will be necessary for those without formal education in stream assessment. Further testing is needed to determine the regional applicability of the SAI.
