Reconstruction of the East Street bridge over the East Fork of the Blue Earth River involved removing the original bridge and returning the river to its natural meander. This paper presents the research, design, modeling, permitting and construction details of the river realignment. Bank stabilization techniques of fillstone toe protection to counter effects of high velocity and potential scouring, bendway weirs that force the thalweg into the center of the river together with vegetative techniques were combined in an integrated, bioengineered solution. Three years of monitoring results will also be presented.
