In 1999, a study to establish a baseline database of fluvial geomorphology characteristics for Kansas streams began. Data were employed to apply a uniform stream classification system and develop regional runoff curves. Regional runoff curve data are essential for estimating the discharge and dimensions of bankfull elevations in ungaged watersheds. The study has used the Rosgen (1994) stream classification. To date, 166 geomorphology surveys have been completed for Kansas. Of these surveys, 125 were at active and discontinued USGS gaging stations. The remainder were at reference reaches on ungaged watersheds. Data were collected by measuring the streams dimension, pattern, and profile at the bankfull elevations. USGS data analysis of hydraulic geometry relationships and flood frequency data helped calibrate the bankfull stage. Study of each stream included surveys of channel cross sections, longitudinal profiles, channel patterns, and channel materials. Data analysis allowed classification of each stream survey as a Rosgen stream type, determination of the bankfull flow channel dimensions, and corresponding discharge. Further analysis developed relationships among hydraulic parameters at the bankfull stage to drainage areahelpful to produce regional curves. Regression analysis strongly correlated drainage area with bankfull discharge when surveys were grouped into hydrophysiographic provinces. This document presents results of the regional runoff curve analysis for identified hydrophysiographic provinces in Kansas.
