The effect that temperature plays in predicting water movement through soils is generally recognized. Groundwater flow varies with the temperature. The warmer the water, the faster it flows. This paper attempts to heighten awareness of the role temperature plays in soil testing for sub-surface treatment/disposal and its subsequent impact on the design of such systems. The paper looks at temperature and the percolation rate, permeability testing and leaching field construction. Situations are presented, based on actual temperature monitoring, and how they can result in leaching fields being up to 62% larger than with currently used methods. Suggestions are made for improving in-ground wastewater treatment/disposal design and construction process.
