The goal of a sampling protocol is to determine the sample size needed and a rule for accepting or rejecting a system under study. The sample size in this case is the number of homes and samples per home. The methodology for determining the sample size is based on evaluation of probabilities. Based on the field data received over a period of time from 4 different aeration units, the probabilities that were developed and cost consideration, a reasonable standard sample size would be 12 sites with 4 samples per site spread out over the year to include the various seasons. If fewer samples are selected, such as 10 sites and 1 sample per site, the probability of making an error in determining the adequacy of a given system will increase. If more samples are taken, the likelihood of making such an error decreases.
