FIELD TESTING OF THE EPARCO COMPACT FILTER WASTEWATER SYSTEM

The Eparco Compact Filter is an on-site wastewater system used extensively in France for the past 12 years. A proprietary granular filter accepts effluent from a specially designed singlechamber fiberglass septic tank and provides tertiary level treatment before being sent to a soil absorption system. To obtain approval in Ontario and other North American regions, Eparco has joined with the Ontario Rural Wastewater Centre (ORWC) to create a unique testing facility for the unit in Elora, Ontario. The facility diverts sanitary sewage from a single-family home equipped with a conventional septic system. Influent and effluent parameters, including BOD5, cBOD5, TSS and flow rates are all measured in the system. This paper provides an overview of the Compact Filter system, the testing facility and results from the first 24 months of successful testing under typical Ontario conditions. First year bi-monthly 24-hour sampling of a comprehensive suite of parameters is followed by bi-monthly grab samples. Results for BOD5, cBOD5 and TSS are shown to be 12, 8 and 6 mg/L, respectively.
