SOIL PERFORMANCE FOR MODEL CODE DEVELOPMENT

A method consistent with the National Model Performance Code Committee of the United States National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association is being developed to estimate the treatment of various onsite and decentralized wastewaters by soil. Matrices, each differing by design factors such as influent wastewater concentration, wastewater loading rate and depth of application, are defined by the wastewater output concentration, x-axis, and probability of reaching that concentration, y-axis. Because of the numerous design factors the number of matrices is large. Several series of matrices, one series for each wastewater constituent are defined. Every soil may be classified by the newly created system and will only fit in one class using terms describing soil characteristics important to estimating wastewater treatment. Treatment capability estimates are based on described soil characteristics that identify chemical reactions, soil aeration, retention time and the flow path of wastewater. Most characteristics and terms used for classification are those currently used for the soil morphological approach to soil and site evaluation. Every possible class of soil is in each matrix and each soil has only one place in each matrix. The matrices may be used to estimate the expected treatment for selected wastewater inputs by the various soils or to determine needed influent wastewater quality prior to soil infiltration to reach desired system output goals or performance standards.
