A program for the certification of professionals to perform inspections and evaluations of existing onsite wastewater systems at the time of property transactions has been developed in Missouri. This program allows for two types of assessments: 1.) an inspection and 2.) an evaluation. An inspection is the more comprehensive of the two assessments in that digging, taking measurements, performing a stress test and possible dye tracing, and exposure of system components are mandated. The evaluation assessment is a visual and sensory walk over of the system with only measurements taken relative to setback distances. The only common tool used between the two assessments is taking a water sample for microbial assessment if the property is on a private water source. The Missouri Small Flows Wastewater Research/Training Center provides the hands-on training to the program to give the students a real world scenario to the training.
