Extensive field tests were conducted on the UC Davis campus in three different types of soil, two operating speeds, and three distinct moisture regimes to determine the effect of soil properties on the soil cutting force measured by the UC Davis soil compaction profile sensor. The results indicated the speed of operation of the profile sensor did not affect the soil cutting force. Although the regression coefficients for the force prediction equations tended to depend on the soil type, they were similar in all three soils tested (clay, sand, and loam). Furthermore, the profile sensor output was well correlated to soil cone index values obtained using a standard cone penetrometer.
