A PROGRAM FOR GENERATING FECAL COLIFORM INPUTS TO HSPFPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Pp. 001-006 in Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Environmental Regulations–II Proceedings of the 8-12 November 2003 Conference (Albuquerque, New Mexico USA), Publication Date 8 November 2003. .(doi:10.13031/2013.15530)Authors: R. Yagow Keywords: Fecal coliform, Bacteria, TMDL, HSPF, Modeling, Fecal Coliform Calculator Calculation of fecal coliform source loads for TMDL development can be both tedious and timeconsuming. However, these source loads are the main fecal coliform inputs to the HSPF model, and accurate estimation of these loads is crucial. Both daily and hourly fecal coliform loads from direct deposition to streams and from deposition on various land use types are required. The representation of land-applied manure is made more complex by its seasonal and spatial variability. The HSPF model requires fecal coliform inputs in tabular form (for land deposition) and time-series files (for direct stream deposition). Software was developed to create these files for input to HSPF. The Fecal Coliform Calculator requires user inputs of animal numbers, land use, and stream access on a sub-watershed level. Default production rates are provided but can be changed by the user. This software greatly speeds up the process of generating fecal coliform inputs to HSPF and allows the user to easily make changes to the sub-watershed inputs to produce new input files. The Fecal Coliform Calculator is written in Visual Basic for Applications and is based on a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, which allows for widespread compatibility with potential users.
