Odor emission rates of agricultural housing systems have not been easily recorded in the past because no continuous measurement methods were available. A new method to record continuously odor emissions rates at livestock buildings, based on a chemo sensor array (CSA), with semiconductor sensors was presented. Results from test demonstrated that the CSA was able to discriminate the odor emissions from different agricultural sources. Comparison of three evaluation methods of CSA signal output showed that a neural network was most suitable for evaluation of odor. The sensitivity of the CSA made it possible to distinguish between stable air samples of different animal species. The distinction was made between dairy cattle and beef bulls. The CSA was calibrated by olfactometry and emission rates of different housing systems for fattening pigs compared based on continuous monitoring. The CSA was able to distinguish the emissions of different housing systems for the same animal species. For example, fattening pig husbandry with different ventilation systems.
