Five polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primer sets that have been previously used for the detection of Salmonella were tested with a real-time PCR assay. One of the five primer sets was capable of detecting down to 3000 CFU per 50 l reaction and was specific for the 15 Salmonella serovars selected. A simple fluorometer has also been designed for the detection of double stranded DNA PCR product and has a detection limit of approximately 0.1 g/ml. An automated biosensor design is proposed and discussed.
