Mechanical Properties of Corn Stover Grind

Mechanical properties of corn stover grinds are important because of the need for accurate input data in the design of densification equipment and mathematical modeling of densification process per se. Mechanical properties of corn stover such as particle size distribution, bulk and particle densities, compressibility, particle stiffness, wall friction and adhesion on steel surface were determined with two hammer mill screen sizes (3.18 and 6.35 mm) at three different moisture contents (7, 11, 15% (wb)). Mechanical properties such as compressibility, initial bulk modulus, porosity index and particle stiffness were determined from a pressure-density data. Compressibility was varied between 476 and 375. Corn stover grinds at low moisture content were easily compressible than grinds at high moisture content. The particle stiffness and maximum compact density were in the range of 14.4-9.7 kPa and 1120-1081 kg/m3, respectively. The initial bulk modulus and porosity index of corn stover grinds varied between 0.74-0.13 MPa and 0.77-0.55, respectively. The wall friction and adhesion coefficient of corn stover grind for a steel plate were in the range between 0.26-0.17and 3.1-0.3, respectively at 7% moisture content. Moisture content, and grind size had a significant effect on wall friction. A slight increase of wall friction was observed at low normal pressure.
