Models of Biosystems in Life Support System Analysis

Long-term space missions like the International Space Station or Lunar and Martian bases become logistically complicated as mission duration increases. A modeling tool has been developed for the study of such systems. The model utilizes a top-level approach and is modular enough to allow flexibility in simulation and development while considering the entire system. Four subsystems have been identified, independently modeled, and subsequently united to form the overall top-level model: Biomass Production, the Crew, Food Processing & Nutrition, and Waste Processing & Resource Recovery. Several scenarios considering an array of missions were simulated to demonstrate the usefulness of the modeling tool. Particular focus will be given to aspects of the system considering biosystems and their effects on the overall life support systems. Furthermore, discussion has been included regarding the future uses of such a modeling platform.
