Seed corn is dried on the ear. The drying of ear corn was investigated experimentally at a commercial seed-processing facility. Twenty four experiments were carried out over a period of six weeks in the year 2001. The initial moisture content varied from 26 to 38% (w.b.), and the final moisture content from 12 to 14% (w.b.). The drying process was simulated using a modified version of the MSU in-bin drying model, the simulated error of prediction for moisture content was 2% and for total drying time was 9 h. The model was used to assess the effect of the main operating parameters on dryer capacity and energy efficiency. Wet bulb temperature has the largest effect on the capacity and the cost.
