The Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) is a voluntary, proactive environmental assurance program, targeted to the agricultural industry. It ensures that producers are engaging in cost-effective pollution prevention practices and are in compliance with environmental regulations. The MAEAP has made tremendous headway in bringing together the leadership of the agricultural industry of Michigan as partners of the MAEAP. The foundations of the voluntary program are firmly in place and are described. The requirements for farmer participation and recognition of achievement are enumerated. The organizational structure of the MAEAP is outlined and challenges and opportunities are discussed.
