Biodiesel is considered to be a potential extender or substitute for crude oil-derived diesel fuel that is able to substantially reduce particulate emissions. Research has shown that this fuel can be used successfully in unmodified engines. Results of preliminary engine modeling and tests have shown that biodiesel has different ignition characteristics than regular diesel fuel because of varied physical and chemical properties. The application of ignition modeling is able to provide guidelines for making adjustments to the engine and also for relatively simple modifications. The objective of this research was to develop a fairly detailed numerical ignition model for a direct injection diesel engine using KIVA-3 code and to use this model to investigate the ignition characteristics of diesel fuel and biodiesel. Results show some significant differences between fuels and also some opportunities to make adjustments to the engine to optimize performance and reduce emissions.
