FEM Implementation: The Flexibility of a High-Level Language Approach

The use of a high-level language in the development of a flexible Finite Element software is demonstrated. The resulting FEM code is much shorter than comparable code written in C or Fortran and is applicable to arbitrary dimensional problems governed by systems of nonlinear transport equations. The system is packaged into a set of files that allow users to specify the problem to be solved separately from the solution approach and was used successfully in a course on biotransport processes. It is concluded that high-level languages offer solid opportunities for implementation of flexible, open FEM code that also help to learn the bases of the method.
