Movement of nutrients, erosion and runoff for potato cropping systems was measured with
a portable rainfall simulator. The cropping systems studied were: 1) compost and manure amended
soil and 2) conventional chemical fertilized soil with no organic amendments. Infiltration rates and
runoff volumes for 1 m X 1 m were estimated from field measurements. Then runoff samples were
taken to assess entrainment of sediments and nutrient content.
Infiltration rates and mass of sediment in runoff were not significantly different. Total nitrogen,
bioavailable phosphorus and total carbon concentrations in the sediments and dissolved phosphorus
concentrations in runoff were significantly higher for amended soils than unamended soils.
