Portable Rainfall Simulator Tests for Assessing the Hydrologic and Nutrient Movement Effects of Organic Amendments In Potato Production Systems

Movement of nutrients, erosion and runoff for potato cropping systems was measured with
a portable rainfall simulator. The cropping systems studied were: 1) compost and manure amended
soil and 2) conventional chemical fertilized soil with no organic amendments. Infiltration rates and
runoff volumes for 1 m X 1 m were estimated from field measurements. Then runoff samples were
taken to assess entrainment of sediments and nutrient content.
