This research discusses different approaches of improving the monthly and annual
sediment yield predictions of the Generalized Watershed Loading Functions (GWLF) model, which is
a watershed model that predicts sediment and nutrient loss. The model has been found to be
problematic in timing and magnitude of the sediment yield predictions.
In attempting to improve the sediment yield predictions, the sediment delivery ratio, soil erosion, and
sediment transport capacity component of the GWLF model were modified with alternative
algorithms. Results show that replacing the USLE erosion calculation with the RUSLE2 approach
most improved the models performance. Changes of the sediment delivery ratio proportionally
improved the magnitude of the model predictions, and the modifications to the sediment transport
capacity did not improve the timing problem very much.
