The nitrates leaching from the excess fertilizer and the decomposition of livestock waste can be transported with the groundwater and pollute water sources far away from the contamination location. This paper presents the results of a laboratory-scale experiment studying the effect of electrokinetic treatment of nitrates in soil under saturated conditions. The experiment showed that the nitrates in soil can be converted to other forms using electrokinetic treatment. The conversion occurs at the cathode (negative electrode) and in the surrounding soil. The inclusion of TDR probes in these experiments enabled us to monitor changes in water content and apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) continuously in a non-destructive way. The application of an electrical gradient slowed down the flow. This effect may be used to retard the flow of contaminated water from one location to another.
