The recycling of treated sewer sludge (biosolids) has become an important and controversial issue in the United States. In Arizona, the majority of treated sewer sludge is recycled as Class B biosolids and land-applied. However, the declining availability of agricultural land along with burdensome post land-application restrictions has made it imperative to explore methodologies to produce Class A biosolids. The present research focuses on the development of a model to predict the level of pathogen reduction in sludge drying beds under arid and semi-arid climate conditions. Key environmental parameters for pathogen survival in biosolids are defined for the conceptual development of a stress unit.
