Barley was dried with intermittent far infrared radiation heating. Duty cycles for different time intervals and infrared heat intensity were investigated for energy efficiency and effect on quality. Total drying time to achieve certain moisture content increased with intermittent heating but the energy input was less than that during continuous heating. Radiation intensity level and exposure interval was found to have an effect on product quality. The duty cycle of short time interval appeared to be most energy efficient. An increase in germination from 61 to above 95 percent was observed when moderate intensity levels were applied. The intermittent far infrared radiation drying has a potential for reducing the energy demand while considerably improving the quality of dried product.
