Thin-layer ear-corn drying tests were conducted experimentally in the 35-45C temperature range; the relative humidity varied from 5 to 35%. A thin-layer drying rate model was parameterized for the product. The calibration data set consisted of 127 data sets (1,206 data points); it was made up of laboratory data (nsets = 65, npoints = 901) and field data (nsets = 62, npoints = 305). The resulting thin-layer model was validated against an independent validation data set (nsets = 30, npoints = 152). Validation of the model against the field data resulted in a standard error of prediction of 0.1147 for the moisture ratio, and 3.8% (d.b.) for the moisture content. The ratio of the standard error of calibration to the standard error of prediction was 1.4, indicating satisfactory robustness of the model.
