Below moisture contents of 16% for the navy beans and 15-16% for the pinto beans breakage increased dramatically. With both the navy and pinto beans there was an increase in breakage with a decrease in temperature, and the increase in breakage occurred at even normal handling temperatures. The percentage of breakage in both pinto and navy beans increased as drop height increased. The amount of damage was linearly related to the drop height. Navy beans had more breakage than pinto beans. The amount of damaged beans was less for beans on beans than on concrete, but the amount of damage was still large. Pinto beans up to 25% moisture were dried to about 15% moisture using an airflow rate of about 1.5 m3/min-m3 (1.9 cfm/bu.), while maintaining bean quality.
