Chemical Additions for Phosphorus Separation from Sand Free Liquid Dairy Manure

Phosphorus separation using chemical additions to treat liquid dairy manure is a viable and important option for manure and nutrient management. Cationic additives (ferric chloride, alum, and lime) were used to precipitate phosphorus in liquid dairy manure with an average total solids of 2.85%. The flocs formed during coagulation were separated from the liquid by settling. After 60 minutes, settling with no chemical additions resulted in a total phosphorus reduction of 24% in the liquid fraction. Twenty four hours of undisturbed settling reduced total phosphorus in the liquid by 60%. Three cationic additives, lime, alum, and ferric chloride, were evaluated using jar tests. Treating the liquid manure with cationic additives resulted in a total phosphorus reduction range of 30 to 82% in the liquid after sixty minutes of settling. Total phosphorus reductions of 57 to 100% were found after twenty four hours of settling was coupled with chemical treatment. Of the three chemical additives tested, alum performed the best under laboratory conditions.
