Non-contact measurement and monitoring of plant growth using machine vision has great significance in improving the level of intelligent control in greenhouses. A machine vision system, which can be used to monitor the growth of cucumber seedlings in a near-real-time and non-destructive manner, was developed for trial in an experimental greenhouse. Image analysis software capable of measuring both the total leaf project area (TPLA) and seedling shoot height was developed using VC++6.0. Our experimental results indicate that by continuously monitoring changes in TPLA of controlled and treated seedlings that the TPLA change rate is a good indicator for fertilizing status in cucumber seedlings. Compared with manual measurements of average shoot height, the image processing measured results had a R2=0.927. These results indicate that machine vision application in greenhouse plant growth monitoring is feasible and promising.
