Atmospheric Gene Flow from Transgenic Corn Crop

There are great concerns about gene flow from genetically modified crops to nondomesticated relatives or non-target crops or surrounding ecosystems. Field experiments and preliminary analysis were conducted to study the dynamic pollen release, dispersion, and deposition, and outcrossing from source corn plants to surrounding receptor cornfields. The temporal and spatial pollen release and dispersal patterns were obtained. Pollen release depends on biological characteristics, wind speed, and weather conditions. Pollen horizontal transport was affected by atmospheric stability, turbulence intensity, wind speed and direction, while vertical transport was affected by turbulence intensity. Outcrossing was affected by pollen deposition and plants competition in pollination. The data was anticipated to be useful in assessing the ecological risks associated with field release of transgenic plants and in developing dynamic models for the risk assessment.
