Two plug flow anaerobic digesters were installed on dairy farms in Northeast Iowa. They were of similar design, but different sizes. One has been successfully operating since fall, 2002. The second one has encountered a series of problems resulting in difficult management challenges which have resulted in it currently not being operational. This paper will describe the digesters, their costs, their successes, and the management challenges encountered.
