Sensitivity Analysis for VHF Dielectric Grain Moisture Measurements

A VHF moisture measurement algorithm that provides "unified" calibrations for many grain types was described in a presentation at the 2001 ASAE Annual Meeting. This presentation reports on further developments in this work--particularly focusing on a detailed sensitivity analysis of the VHF moisture measurement method and the implications of the sensitivity analysis for the development of practical commercial instruments. Finite element analysis, signal flow graphs, and sample measurements were used to investigate several critical aspects of the transmission line test cell including: electrode spacing, length of grain-filled section, shields and dielectric materials in proximity to the test cell, and effective versus actual dielectric constant.
