This paper describes a design/build project course in the Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors sequence that serves as a capstone-like culmination to the engineering honor students' first academic year. This design project involves all aspects of planning, designing, building, testing, documenting, and demonstrating an autonomous robot that has to perform prescribed tasks within a specified time limit while operating over a specially constructed course or track. The controller used for this robot design project is a popular Motorola 68HC11-based controller board has a variety of digital and analog input ports for interfacing with various sensors and special ports for controlling infrared transmission and reception, up to four DC motors, and up to two servos.
