GIS-Based Land-Use Evaluation for Dust Storm Prevention in the Windward Regions of the Capital, China

Dust storms occur frequently in Beijing and northern China in recent years especially after 1990, and it became the most serious natural disaster in late ten years. So, in near future it is very important to prevent the disaster of dust storms in a few urgent regions such as the windward regions of Beijing. According to relevant researches, the change of ground quality contributed more to these disasters duo to land-use changes and over-due anthropic activities. This paper aims at the land degradation suffered wind erosion in the windward regions of Beijing which are including in the mountains of northern Hebei Province, Inner Mongolia Plateau between Hebei and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. A GIS-aid to the land use suitability evaluation for land-use planning incorporates topography, vegetation cover, wind velocity and its direction, soil types, land-use types, and the distance from sandy land, water source and villages. Present land-use is categorized according to the degradation, such as available land, protected land, degraded land and heavily degraded land. Multi-criteria analysis is performed to evaluate landscape rehabilitation for each category, according to appropriately measured and weighted factors. A degradation map is developed using an algorithm that combines factors in weighed linear combinations, which is very helpful to land-use planning and landscape rehabilitation in such regions.
