The header unit of a tractor-driven combine harvester was developed and tested. The principal component is the stripper which derives its peripheral speed from the tractor Power-Take-Off (P.T.O.) shaft. Stripper power requirement was found to be 4.03kw and its theoretical capacity 0.21kg/s. The machine was tested at five peripheral speeds of 100, 140, 180, 220 and 260 rev/mm at two forward speeds of 3km/hr and 5km/hr using a 60kw Ford tractor. The test crop (ITA 150 Paddy) yielded 1,410kg/ha at test site. Pre-harvest loss was 32 kg/ha. Results show that header total losses reduced with increasing peripheral speed with the highest reduction occuring between 100rev/min and 140rev/min for the two forward speeds. Machine field efficiency also increased linearly from 69.1 percent at 100rev/min to 92.0 percent at 260 rev/min and from 77.7percent to 90.2 percent at 3km/hr and 5km/hr respectively.
