Acetylated starch and 15% cellulose acetate were mixed and pretreated with acetone solution, and the mixture was extruded as a composite. The tensile strength and water resistance were effectively improved due to addition of cellulose acetate as compared to the acetylated starch plastic. The composite had a uniform phase through observation using scanning electron microscopy. It is due to the acetylated starch and cellulose acetate combined during acetone pretreatment and later extrusion to form a uniform structure. In addition, the tensile and thermal properties of the composite depended on its equilibrium moisture content relating to various relative humidity environments. The biodegradability of the composite was evaluated as standard ISO 14852-1999, the result showed that it was degraded to 83%.
