As animal feeding operations grow and expand to meet the increasing need to supply food products for human consumption there is an increase in potential to pollute ground and surface waters. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) joint strategy identifies the development of Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans (CNMP) by operators of animal feeding operations as a way to identify and resolve potential and current water quality related resource problems generated by these operations. One of the six elements that must be addressed in the development of a CNMP is the planning, design and construction of manure and wastewater storage/treatment facilities. The Animal Waste Management (AWM) computer program has been developed by NRCS to provide an efficient tool that can be used to develop alternative designs for manure and wastewater storage/treatment facilities.
