The preparation of Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans requires matching the
storage component(s) of manure management systems with the nutrient management strategy. The
SPAW Field and Pond Hydrology Model was used to evaluate in a daily time step the temporary
storage-sizing component of NRCS's AWM Version 2.02. The results of the evaluation showed
AWM's temporary storage component tends to be conservative in that the pond level will not have to
be lowered during critical storage periods in the majority of years.
The analysis showed the designer does need to be cautious where the runoff producing areas are
represented by a Runoff Curve Number of 96 or less. Depending on climate, AWM may tend to
underestimate monthly runoff volumes, requiring frequent pumping during critical storage periods.
