Salinity Stress Effect on Germination and Evelopment of Sesane

The need of integration of the semi-arid region economy to the national and international markets, makes necessary the development of researches seeking the evaluation of tolerant species to salinity. With this purpose, the effect of irrigation water salinity on four varieties (CNPA-G2, INAMAR-SM2, ORO-9171 and IAC-OURO) of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), developed by Embrapa Algodo, was studied. The results showed that the four studied varieties are tolerant to the applied salt contents, where the seeds germinated in all salinity levels (25 to 200 meq L-1), even the percentage of germination has decreased with the increase of NaCl content. The total length of plantules and the hypocotyl length were affected by the increase of the salt concentrations. The IAC-OURO variety was the most sensitive to salinity effects.
