DRAINMOD has been modified recently to include a soil temperature option that incorporates soil freezing and thawing and snow accumulation and melting. This new feature is especially useful for modeling drainage in areas like central Illinois that experience snowfall and frozen soils. Central Illinois is heavily tiled and the model, DRAINMOD has been used in the past to model the hydrology and water quality of the region. The parameters included in the modified model have not been previously obtained for central Illinois soils and weather conditions. This paper presents the results of applying the modified model to 14 crop years of data from two field sites in the Little Vermilion River Watershed in central Illinois. Simulated results from both the original and modified models were compared with observed data to determine the applicability of the new option. The modified model has the potential to explain drainage patterns more precisely in locations that experience frozen precipitation and frozen soils, however results of this study are inconclusive as to whether the modified model provides a significant improvement for drainage modeling in the central Illinois region.
